From the front dust jacket flap:
This is a book about the "place called Kansas"--the story of Kansas
as viewed by the late Cecil Howes, who for nearly half a century
was statehouse reporter in Topeka for the Kansas City Star...

This Place Called Kansas is not a "history" in the accepted sense
of the word. Rather, it is a collection of highly entertaining and
revealing anecdotes which are representative of the social and
cultural pattern of the state.

Since it deals with such events as the county-seat wars, the
newspaper "Frankensteins," the grasshopper army, and the railroad
story, the "tall tales from the short grass," and the days of the
cattle drives, the book will interest historians, folklorists, and
newspaper people. But most of all, it will interest Kansans, who
will see here a picture of themselves painted by one of their own,
a man who was proud of his state and his people, a man who never
apologized for Kansas and often said that if Kansans knew more
about the elements that made their state great they would more
nearly share in that greatness themselves.
