Title: American Progress: The Growth of the Transport, Tourist, and
Information Industries in the Ninteenth-Century West

First Edition, First Printing.

From the introduction:
This book examines aspects of the development of the American West during
the second half of the nineteenth century by means of three related themes:
transport, tourism, and the growth of the information and advertising industries.
Between 1870 and 1900, the marketing of the West was one of America's
greatest national accomplishments. It was based on the construction of the
transcontinental railroads and the associated land sales and settlement, but
selling the West also depended on the opening of a vigorous new frontier
which exploited the region's immense scenic and climatic resources. This
involved the promotion of a new type of western exploration, and created
the western tourist industry.

Illustrations, old advertisements, photos and maps throughout the book.
