hoax. The unscrupulous John Law made the newly erected huddle of
thatched huts sound so appealing that men flocked to sell their holdings in
France and invest in Louisiana. Ship after ship arrived in New Orleans,
bringing French people of every class, criminals to aristocrats, as well as
German peasants and slaves from Africa and the West Indies. The reality
of the new city could not have met the expectations of the most pessimistic
immigrant. But they did acquire an ability to adapt which later helped them
withstand the caprices of nature and European governments.

against Spain, then granted to two successive commercial enterprizes, and
once again reclaimed by France. Thirty-three years later, the King of France
ceded Louisiana to his cousin, the King of Spain, and the Creoles were under
the rule of their arch-enemy. Throughout all of this political juggling, the Creoles
remained loyal to France and they were overjoyed at being reunited with their
mother country in 1803. Their celebration was short, however, because they
were immediately thereafter sold to the U.S.

are quite clean and crisp, with minor wear, and a red area on one of the front
blank pages. As noted, there is a summary pasted on the front endpapers,
there's also a yellowed tape stain about 2" long on the flyleaf. The covers
have some minor wear.
